Scuba diving

September 6, 2007

Last weekend, I did my PADI Open Water scuba classes. Going underwater is such an experience!!! So we started spending both Saturday and Sunday morning with lectures and watching lengthy videos.

But the good thing was that we spent both afternoon diving in CU Teagle Hall's pool! After getting all the gear (that were fortunately all the right size for me) and spending 25 minutes sweating in the wetsuit out of the water until the last sophomore finally get it (how to get into the wetsuit), we went underwater. At first, it was quite uncommon since didn't felt both lungs overcharged with too much air I inhale at the surface to go deeper. I was use to dive to the bottom at the pool when I was lifeguard to get a bunch of lost objects, but this was different, I was breathing underwater!

The experience in the pool was great, but the bottom of Teagle Hall is quite plain and after 6 hours diving over there, I can certainly state that the only interesting thing we found over there was a drown spider. I expect the Open Water dives to be much more trilling since there will be way more to see!

For over 25 years, Cornell U used to do the scuba diving certification from the beach on Cayuga Lake. Few weeks ago, the landowner sold it to the government to create a Wildlife reserve. The good thing is that the nature will be preserved. The bad one is that diving from there is now prohibited. So we might be diving in a new environment from a boat. I am sure that will be a great challenge for the certification.

So if anybody is interested in taking the PADI Advanced Open Water certification with me, let me know. I might also go to the Bahamas during the Spring break for the diving trip. Anyone interested in joining me ?
